It is not easy to get a transplant. It is approved only for refractory c. difficile (two positive tests within the past 12 months). However, the fact that it has been approved for some use means the treatment is out there, safe, and effective when done properly.
Care must be taken in handling the donor material. It must be kept anaerobic (much of the intestinal microbiota is anaerobic). It needs to be specially processed, especially if used as capsules to be swallowed, which treats the upper colon. Transplants through enema may only reach the lower colon.
My colleague Dr Jonathan Birch in southern California has been treating refractory c. diff with transplants for many years and tells me he has had awesome results. He also is one of our ozone trainees, so is one doctor I’d certainly want to go to if I was in his area. I’ve asked him to make some comments:
