Dear Subscriber,
I have an interesting post for you today. I know you tend to think of “organs” of your body as hard structures like kidney, liver, etc. Now consider that some organs function is to simply make hormones, like the thyroid. Of course, we tend to call that a “gland”. So where I use the term organ, or gland in this post, please keep that in mind.
This is about a totally different type of structure or organ, that serves your body (or disserves it) in ways previously unimaginable. I’ll call it “poopgan” for what it is – your poop, or fecal material.
Your poopgan is your intestinal microbiome, or the trillions of individual living organisms in your gut at this moment. Yes, you do eliminate this “organ”, but the poopgan continually regenerates itself.
It began at your birth, where you were inoculated with the beneficial germs in your mom’s birth canal, then supplemented via her skin and breast milk. The “good germs” then set up a symbiosis with you. Your body is host, and they serve your body by making lots of good stuff, and protecting you from some pretty bad guys. But you do have to nourish and fertilize them, and keep them “weeded”, just as you would any cultivation. Otherwise, the good guys will wither and be replaced by bugs you don’t want.
How do we know the impact of your gut “tropical rain forest” on your body? Amazingly as it seems, the gut biome is literally a part of you. It nourishes you with vitamins, hormones, neurotransmitters and precursors to a lot of molecules you need. And they are part and parcel of your personality.
New research has shown that a transplant of a healthy someone else’s poopgan (poop organ) can resolve mental conditions like depression, alcoholism, obesity, even bipolar, and more.
